KATSUYAMA AND HEISENJI

There are some interesting places in Fukui which people like to visit. In my HP, I recommend that you should visit them if you come to Fukui.

Katsuyama City in Fukui

Sometimes when I want to go for an outing somewhere, I think of Katsuyama City as a candidate. Katsuyama is a city where I think people can enjoy the cycle of the season. I introduce Heisenji Temple to you; I think you can feel one side of the Japanese culture.

Heisenji Temple

Heisenji Temple was founded by Taicho in 717. From the ancient times to the later Middle Ages, the temple had the greatest power as a center of Hakusan faith.
The faith is committed to Hakusan as a holy mountain. In Japan, people have adored mountains themselves as holy objects. Hakusan is one of three sacred mountains to equal Mt.Fuji and Tateyama.
It is said that Heisenji Temple flourished the best in Muromachi era. The temple ruled the land as a feudal lord. However, the farmers who were not able to bear it based themselves on Muraoka Mountain in 1574, gathered 700 soldiers and attacked Heisenji Temple. As a result, it was destroyed by them.
After that, the revival of Heisenji Temple was often attempted, but the temple couldn't regain its former prosperity.
In Heisenji Temple, people sold the institution and Buddhist altar fittings, but left a main shrine, the torii and so on. It survived, has been transformed into Hakusan Jinja, and remains to this day as such.

Delicious Ice Cream stand in Heisenji Temple

When you return from Heisenji Temple, you will be able to have a pleasure. It is to eat delicious ice cream. Some people who are from Katsuyama recommend you to eat it. My first choice is Princhan, but I can't show it in the picture. Regrettably, the shop is closed in winter. It can't open because of heavy snow.
