Non-Invasive Genetic Analysis Using Mammalian Feces

We have developed methods for efficiently conducting non-invasive genetic analyses using fecal samples from mammals. These approaches allow us to investigate paternity, kinship, genetic structure, and dispersal patterns in wild populations.

Ecology and Social Structure of Mammals

We study the ecology and social structure of mammals through fieldwork and genetic analyses. For example, we have estimated the population density of monogamous raccoon dogs in Japan and examined dispersal patterns of Japanese serows in mountainous regions.

Genetic Structure and Paternity in Primates

Primarily based on the principal investigator’s prior research, we have investigated social structure and paternity in primates. For example, the paternity of Japanese macaques, chimpanzees, and western gorillas has been determined, and the genetic structure of great apes has been examined to infer aspects of human evolution.

Research on Invasive Species

We study the population ecology of invasive species. For example, we have documented multiple introductions and the range expansion of raccoons in Japan, as well as habitat use and abundance of an introduced population of Japanese weasels.

Observation of Animals

We conduct behavioral observations of animals, primarily mammals in zoos. The principal investigator focuses mainly on mammals, but some students also study the behavior of birds.
